What’s involved in a custom kitchen?
Bycraft Kitchens & Cabinetry builds custom kitchens in its Grey County shop for homes all over Ontario. It starts with Dan coming out to see the room. He measures, looks at how you get in and out of the space, and talks with you about your family, how you cook, what’s on your wish list and what you want to spend.
Then he draws up the layout and elevations, puts together a quote and builds the cabinets in his shop. Islands, pantries, coffee bars and range hoods get designed along with the rest of the room. Planning work elsewhere in the house too? Have a look at bathroom vanities and built-ins.
Materials and hardware
- Painted MDF doors, or solid wood like cherry, walnut, white oak, maple and pine
- Doors are ordered raw and finished in the shop
- Melamine or plywood boxes and drawers, built in-house
- Soft-close slides and hinges from Blum and Hettich
- Pull-outs for garbage, utensils and spices, plus tray dividers, all built to fit
Is a custom kitchen the right fit?
If your room is an awkward shape, you want a certain wood or paint colour, you need more storage, or you want an island everyone can sit around, a custom kitchen makes sense. If your cabinet boxes are still in good shape and you mostly want a new look, cabinet refacing might be all you need.
What about countertops, plumbing and appliances?
Dan designs, builds and installs the cabinets. He can put in wood or laminate countertops, but stone and quartz come from a countertop company. Plumbing, electrical, flooring and hooking up appliances are left to your other trades.

We’re based in Grey County, and most of our work is within about an hour and a half of the shop. For bigger jobs Dan will travel farther. We’ve built kitchens in London, Strathroy and Coldstream, a new build in Walkerton and a boathouse kitchen on Lake Joseph in Muskoka.
